We did our objective building/strategic planning vaguely unconference style.
We put up big signs under four categories:
- Big Picture Goals/Vision
- Diversity and Growth
With Projects/Apps/Events further broken down to:
- Safety and Justice
- Economic Development
- Anything Else
We then gave everyone a lot of pens and post-its to put their ideas up. After that, we had a round of voting where everyone voted on which ideas they liked. The guideline was, "You are voting with your time. If you put a mark on an idea you like, think of it as committing time to that idea. The more time you want to commit, the more you should vote." If someone wanted to step up to champion a specific idea, they wrote their name on it.
That gave us this list. We then had a discussion of every idea on the list that received some votes. That not only narrowed down and filled out some ideas, but also led to new ideas (like taking part in FOIA Day).
This is the second time we have used this strategy, and it seems to build in effectiveness each time we do.
